summer literacy initiative
Project LIT is Metropolitan Baptist Church’s (The Met’s) summer literacy initiative designed to support elementary students in North Tulsa who are reading below grade level. Through this program, The Met offers a four-week, full-day summer camp that provides intensive, evidence-based reading instruction to help students build confidence, skill, and a strong foundation for future learning.
Partnering with Reading Quest, a literacy organization based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Project LIT delivers high-quality instruction through a proven model that emphasizes phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Our Mission & Vision
Project LIT aligns with The Met’s broader mission to serve as both a spiritual and social anchor in North Tulsa. This initiative reflects our commitment to holistic ministry — meeting both the educational and spiritual needs of children and families in our community.
Our vision is to help build a generation of confident, capable readers who see themselves as learners and leaders. We believe literacy opens doors, strengthens identity, and creates opportunity — fulfilling the biblical call to “train up a child in the way they should go.”
Who We Serve
Project LIT is designed for students in grades 2–4 who are reading below grade level. This critical stage of learning is where early literacy gaps can either be closed or widened. By intervening early, we aim to support students before those gaps grow larger and more difficult to overcome.

Proven Impact
Project LIT has already demonstrated powerful results.
In its first two summers, including our 2024 pilot, students gained an average of seven months of reading growth in just four weeks. This level of progress represents a significant leap forward for children who were previously performing well below grade level.
With strong student attendance, meaningful family engagement, and a community-anchored approach, Project LIT has become a model for faith-based, community-driven literacy support.
